Questions and mostly Concerns on Scholarly Research

After watching all of the micro-lectures on Canvas, I feel pretty ready to start getting into research. The only question I really still have is about bibliographies: how should we do them? It has been a long time since I have had to do a proper research paper with a proper bibliography so I’m not completely sure I’ll do it correctly. I know I used to use a tool called Noodle Tools which was incredibly helpful, but if I remember correctly there are different formats for citing sources and of course I may not actually write a paper which could make citing sources completely different. To that point, along with making a bibliography I’m assuming that sources will need to be cited as we use them. I’ve used footnotes in the past, but if my method for sharing my research was a podcast, how should I formally cite where I got the information I share? What does bring me some reassurance is that we will be regularly checking, so I’m sure that all of my questions will be answered.

As for the research itself, I feel confident in my ability to navigate the library website and troubleshoot any issues that I might encounter after finishing the micro-lectures. I’m sure I will have issues and regret ever typing that, but for now my only concern when it comes to actually doing the research is the amount of time it will take to not only find the right source, but then to examine the source for useful information. This process will certainly be time consuming, but I am hoping that that will be time well spent as I will definitely need to do more research in the future and having this experience now should hopefully prepare me nicely.

  1. I actually have never thought that far ahead yet Griffin. I would have to agree with you though, it has been a long time since I have done a research paper and I don't even think I have ever properly done a bibliography before. I used to just write down the author, title, publication date, and link to where I found my sources at the end of my papers. Although, I think there is a better way to do it, I just have to be taught it or shown it to actually be able to do it. Good luck!

  2. Hi Griffin! I definitely share a lot of the same concerns. I have also used NoodleTools in the past, which was a big help. I know PurdueOwl is a good resource for learning how to cite from scratch too! I assume for a project like this we would use APA format, but that is definitely something I would check in on. I was also curious how to cite in some of the project formats, but I'm sure this will all get cleared up as we begin to work through it all. These are all great questions Griffin, and I wish you the best of luck starting this project!

  3. Hi Griffin! I think you brought up great questions regarding a bibliography. In my experience, I've mostly relied on an MLA format, so I assume that this will be the standard for the project. I haven't had to do a bibliography in a while, so I will definitely be challenged in this area as well! I wish you the best of luck with your research and composing your bibliography!

  4. Hey Griffin! I kind of forgot about that part of a research paper, even though clearly it's a huge part. I need some reminders too on how to properly site my sources. I used NoodleTools in high school and also EasyBib, although I heard that one was less reliable. At least we'll all be slightly confused together!

  5. Hey Griffin! I honestly haven't given much thought to the bibliography for my research paper. Now that you mention it, I also wouldn't know how to do a bibliography if I chose not to write a traditional essay for my excursion. I know that in high school, my English teachers always had us use Perdue Owl to cite our sources in MLA format. I'm not sure how to cite sources for some of the excursions options, especially the podcast.

  6. Hey Griffin. I share the same concern regarding citations in my bibliography. I, too, have used NoodleTools in the past. It definitely made compiling sources and notes quite easy, especially when working with a large quantity of sources. It's good to hear you feel confident navigating databases! I agree that the research process will take a long time and likely be quite tedious. Hope your research goes smoothly and you don't have to regret writing about your confidence with regards to the research process! :)

  7. Hi Griffin, I also have questions regarding how to cite sources when creating a podcast. Citing is the most intimidating part of the research process and I feel that it's not talked about enough. I'ver never used NoodleTools before, but am very interested to learn about how it works! As much as our research projects seem super scary and new now, I'm sure we'll all do a great job as we get more practice!
