Micro lecture 3 and There, There
Settler colonialism is different from regular colonialism mostly on the basis that the colonists never leave. This pertains to the stories and characters of Tommy Orange’s There, There in the sense that the characters are Native Americans who were colonized by the British, Spanish, Dutch, and French. However, instead of taking over and then leaving, those colonists set up permanent residence in America forcing Native Americans off of their land and out of their homes. Because of this displacement, Native Americans went from covering all of North America to being forced into small reservations. These people lost their land and also lost the culture of their tribes. Each tribe is not the same, they have different beliefs, cultures, and languages. But to the colonists, they were all the same. Therefore, the idea of forcing them into these small reservations together meant nothing to them in terms of the loss of culture or the conflict in Tribes. When reading the stories of the characters in There, There, you find them to be somewhat disconnected from the tribes they are from and instead forced to fit under the general category of “Native”. There is also the matter of displacement and belonging that seems to be a consistent theme throughout the novel for each character. Being forced to move from where you came from causes all kinds of problems. But on the other hand, I think it is really interesting the way that urbanization is described. While it is true that the loss of Native land is still devastating, the community has not died. The fact that Native Americans have been forced into these cities has not caused them to disappear, but rather change and acclimate to the new environment.
Very important to recognized that in spite of displacement, community does survive and thrive among indigenous peoples in North America.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is interesting to see the adaptation of Native Americans into urban areas, especially what traditions Native Americans still somewhat followed and what traditions that were passed down less of the time.
